Challenge The Process

Stellar leadership does not happen overnight, it is an arduous process. One of the most important challenges that a leader faces is overcoming their natural inclination to maintain the status quo. A business cannot reach its true potential unless a visionary leader is able to push through the glass ceiling and allow the company to grow.

One of the most crucial practices that takes place is the challenging of the process. It can be a great deal of fun to brainstorm and come up with plans and ideas that will become a catalyst for lasting change. Unless a leader is able to experiment and take certain risks, their business simply remains the same.

When you take the time to research the backstory of any successful leader, you will find a common thread to their tales: none of them ever put their feet up and decided to keep things the way that they were. Too often, we fall into the trap of conducting business in a specific manner because that is what we are accustomed to.

Leaders search for opportunities to shake up a company, to make necessary changes to the business model. Growth does not happen without change and a quality leader is aware of this fact. A visionary leader is one who is not afraid to fail. There is no place for trepidation during the challenging of the process.

All ideas must be considered, even when they do not seem feasible in that particular moment. A leader’s antenna must always be up, probing and searching for new opportunities. Searching is the first and most crucial part of the process.

The second part of the process (and arguably just as important) is to listen. The more constructive listening that you are able to do as a leader, the better your chances of coming across that million dollar idea that forever alters the way that your company conducts business.

A great idea can come from any source, at any time. Receptive leaders will typically speak to clients in order to learn more about their feelings and concerns. Searching for opportunities to innovate, grow and improve is crucial, but unless you are willing to listen to the world around you, these opportunities become quite limited.

View each person that you come across each day as another opportunity to learn. Some of the greatest ideas are those that came from an unexpected source. In many instances, inspiration strikes at the moment when we are least expecting it.

The solutions to your problems do not always lie within, so being able to step outside of yourself and look at the bigger picture is crucial. Having a mindset that enables you to think outside of the box will affect your long term ability to prosper in a positive manner.

Leaders cannot afford to allow themselves to become complacent. There is always a new process, a different product, a method for streamlining production that has not been discovered yet. By taking the time to do the proper research, leaders can formulate a plan that involves taking calculated risks.

Calculated risk taking is the lifeblood of any prosperous venture. There cannot be growth without experimentation, which is the catalyst for true and effective change. A leader who has their finger on the pulse of their team will not recommend any sort of grand, sweeping changes.

Instead, a leader with their eye on the bigger picture allows his team to take smaller risks that are far more calculated. Even though there is always a high possibility for failure, leaders search out the smaller victories. Even the smallest of victories serve to boost a staff’s confidence.

When a staff is confident, they are emboldened and much more likely to take smart risks in the future. With each win that occurs, a staff’s confidence soars and their chances for long term success increase greatly. Success does not happen in the blink of an eye, it happens as a result of careful planning and the groundwork is laid gradually.

Minor successes help to pave the way for major ones, but failure’s role in the learning process cannot be discounted. It is impossible to become a strong leader without having experienced failures along the way. While these instances can put a damper on productivity, a great leader is able to rally their troops and remind them of the bigger picture.

Leaders and staffs alike learn just as much from failure as they do from success. Failure is a powerful teaching tool and often does more to teach us about the world of business than the prosperous times are able to. Having the mentality to turn failure into success, to internalize the lessons learned and take better risks in the future, is what separates leaders who are truly willing to challenge the process from those who are stuck with the status quo.

Challenging the process is not about making change for the sake of making change, fixing things that aren’t broken or eliminating aspects of a business that don’t mesh with your personal philosophies. It is about implementing strategies that enable your business to continue to grow, without disrupting all of the things that have allowed the company to prosper in the past.

In order to achieve the results you desire, you must be willing to experiment, listen to those around you and have the stomach for failure. Only then are you able to obtain the business growth that you are seeking.
